If you don't measure it, you don't know whether it worked
Five symptoms, five different diagnoses. Reading them correctly is what stops you fixing the wrong thing.
The instruments
Google Search Console tells you what people searched, how often you appeared, and whether they clicked. Analytics tells you what happened after they arrived. Your phone log and form submissions tell you whether any of it turned into work.
You need all three, because each one addresses a different measurement gap.
Five symptoms and what they mean
- Indexed but almost no impressions — the topic, coverage or relevance is off, or you have no authority for it yet. Reconsider the target before rewriting.
- Impressions but few clicks — you are appearing but not being chosen. Fix the title and the opening line so they match what the searcher wanted.
- Ranking on page two or three — the page is close. Strengthen the content, add internal links, publish supporting articles around it.
- Traffic but no leads — the intent is mismatched or the page doesn't convince. Improve proof, clarity of offer and the next step.
- An older page declining — information has gone stale. Update it rather than writing a new one.
Then decide, deliberately
At the end of each month, list the three candidate next actions, pick the one closest to producing a valuable customer, and write down one sentence explaining why. Ten minutes of deciding protects the next thirty hours of working.
